Overview

Students will be introduced to the goals of the BioArt Lab and the structure of the program as a living studio. They will explore how art, design, and biology intersect to shape how we understand the world and learn why combining artistic and scientific ways of observing strengthens communication and environmental awareness.

Students will receive sketchbooks and practice using them as artists and scientists do; to record observations, sketches, and ideas. They will begin with blind contour drawing, focusing on the subject without looking at their paper to emphasize seeing over perfection. Timed studies (30 sec, 1 min, and 5 minutes) will also encourage students to focus on key details and notice how observation improves with time. By observing sample organisms and reference images, students will discuss how visual choices influence interpretation. The workshop will end in creating a “field card” of a chosen organism.
